5. ben roflsberger - a day after his 26th birthday, the steelers quarterback was the recipient of an eight year contract totaling $102 million. to contrast, i got "saved by the bell" on dvd for my last birthday. i can't wait 'til i turn 26. after leading his team to a super bowl win, big ben has established himself as a premier quarterback in the league and threw a team-record 32 touchdowns last season. while it's nice to lock up a young quarterback throughout his prime, i think the steelers made a rash move here. the pats signed randy moss for only three years and $27 million, and he caught 23 touchdowns last year. how many did roethlisberger catch? you guessed it, not a one.
4. walk-offs - we're in the first week of spring training, but things are starting to feel like october already. aside from the fact that i haven't seen a baseball game in four months. with two outs in the ninth, mark teahan singled in angel berroa to lead the royals to a 7-6 victory over the chi sox. not to be outdone, ruben tejada plated michael abreu to help the mets defeat atlanta 3-2. but the star of the night was chris basak, whose game-winning home run sent the reds packing and led to minnesota's first jumping-home-plate-throng of the season. although i'd imagine the nickname "mr. march" is not very fulfilling.
3. deron williams - after andrei kirilenko was on the receiving end of a flagrant foul by dirk the jerk, he had to leave the game early in the first quarter. x-rays on his hip came back negative and fortunately for jazz fans, deron williams was more than willing to pick up where the lanky ukrainian left off. his 17 points and season-high 20 assists led the way to a 116-110 victory over the mavericks. of course, those assists would have been worthless if not for his teammates converting their shots. so really, the credit goes to everyone on the jazz except for deron williams.
2. gilbert arenas - the mercurial wizards guard has missed 51 games this season due to a knee injury. yesterday he was finally cleared to practice, but no timetable has been set for his return. arenas himself has voiced concern over returning too early and possibly reaggrivating the injury. "it's nerve-racking because I don't want to get hurt again. two injuries back-to-back kind of messes with a guy's mental state." as much as i want to see arenas in action as soon as possible, it's refreshing to hear an athlete admit he's dealing with fear. let's hope gilbert's fear of dinosaurs and carnivorous felines doesn't affect his status for the team's weekend games against the raptors and bobcats.
1. schizophrenia - try and make sense of the last three games from texas tech: 45 point loss to texas a&m, upset the #5 texas longhorns, 58 point loss to kansas. on senior night in lawrence, the jayhawks scored a season-high 109, a point total typically reserved for the louisiana-monroes and florida atlantics of the world. bill self's squad had six double-figure scorers and shot a mind-boggling 60% from the field. in the midst of all that boggle, they were even able to hold the red raiders under 30% from the field. texas tech isn't quite done yet, a strong showing in the big 12 tournament could vault them into the big dance. but for that to happen, pat knight's going to have to get his hands on some lithium.
